Let me say something no one says out loud:

Without the parent, there is no athlete.

WHO I AM

Hi, I’m Marina Kuperman Villatoro,

A mama on a mission, a podcast host, and the founder of Raising Pro Athletes.

We celebrate the trophies, the highlight reels, the championship moments. But nobody ever asks: who started this journey first? Who reorganized their entire life, learned a sport from scratch, and showed up every single day, long before any scout, sponsor, team or stadium took notice?

Because it wasn’t only the athlete.

“The parent behind the athlete is the untold story. That’s the story I’m here to tell.”

THE STORIES THAT STARTED IT ALL

Before Serena and Venus Williams dominated Wimbledon, their father Richard was having 5 AM sessions on cracked Compton courts, filming hundreds of training videos and mailing them to coaches who laughed and slammed doors in his face.

Before Cristiano Ronaldo became who he is, his mother Dolores raised four children alone in poverty in Madeira, working multiple jobs as a cook and cleaner. Most nights she went to bed hungry so her kids could eat.

Ronaldo says it plainly: “My mother is the pillar of my life. Without her, I wouldn’t be where I am.”

When Lionel Messi was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency at age 11, every club in Argentina turned the family away. His parents crossed an ocean on a promise. His mother arrived in Barcelona a year later, and her presence gave him the strength to become who he is today.

And Shaun White’s parents, a water department worker and a waitress, couldn’t afford ski resort lodging, so they bought a beat-up van and parked it at the base of the San Bernardino Mountains every single winter weekend. They spent roughly $20,000 a year on a sport they could barely afford.

They did it anyway.

The Williams family had a playbook. The Messis had a playbook. The Whites had a playbook.

But nobody was sharing it.

MY JOURNEY

For the past four years, I’ve been living this from the inside. Financially supporting my son’s training. Relocating our family to Spain. Navigating every pivot, setback, and breakthrough alongside him.

I’ve seen the resistance and the growth. The mistakes and the breakthroughs. The moments where I questioned everything, and the moments that made it all worth it.

It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done. And the most rewarding.

What I discovered along the way is that most families don’t even know this level of involvement exists. They think talent alone gets you there. It doesn’t.

What gets you there is a strategic, intentional, all-in family system.

And nobody is talking about how to build one.

It’s not about talent. It’s about the parent who reorganized their entire life, became the first coach, the first manager, the first believer, and never stopped.

WHAT RAISING PRO ATHLETES IS

Raising Pro Athletes is where I pull back the curtain on all of it. Every episode, every article, every story dives into the quiet moments that built champions, the decisions, the systems, the commitment, and the sacrifices that elite sports families live by but almost never talk about.

I connect with the behind-the-scenes heroes: parents just like you.

What you’ll get here:

  • Real, raw truth - no sugarcoating what this journey actually takes

  • The systems and strategies that elite sports families use (and never publicize)

  • Honest conversations about money, sacrifice, mental health, and identity

  • Support from parents who are in it, have been through it, or have come out the other side

  • The playbooks of parents who raised ELITE / PRO athletes

It takes a strategic village to raise a pro athlete.

This is your village.

Thank you for being here.
